Susan Hart (The Knitting Shepherd) has lived on Manitoulin since 1993. While escorting pet sheep to pasture, The Shepherd knits giant hat forms (check out the photos to see an example), which are later hand-felted and shaped. The caps are recreations of 15th and 16th century European headgear, gleaned from paintings and historical documentation, with a little guesswork added in the mix. When not out with the sheep, she also spins, weaves and creates lacework.
The fleeces of the pet sheep are currently being hand-spun in order to make truly 100% Manitoulin-made woolens. Stay tuned!
As the hats are handmade, each hat varies in size - please see chart below for sizing on each individual hat. For anyone on Manitoulin Island, you are welcome to stop in at The Island Jar and try hats on for sizing!
